LSCC Zoom Conference With Chairs Of Wd Ladies Society Chapters

On June 24, 2020, the Ladies Society Central Council of the Western Diocese (LSCC) organized a Zoom meeting at 11AM for all the chairladies of the Ladies Society chapters and their representatives under the leadership and guidance of the Diocesan Primate Archbishop Hovnan Derderian.

The participants discussed the various efforts that were used to reach members and maintain viable contact while ensuring everyone’s safety and maintaining social distancing.  What transpired from the meeting, where Archbishop Derderian asked each of the chapters’ representatives to present their reflections and list of activities, was the incredible creativity and determination each chapter undertook to continue the mission of encouraging, guiding and supporting the Ladies Society members of the Western Diocese.

The twenty five-participants, representing twenty-three ladies society chapters, shared with each other imaginative and much appreciated fellowship gestures and activities such as providing drive-through meals in a church parish parking lot, to delivering meals to “shut-in” members, attending virtual yoga classes, hosting their own virtual meetings, and making good and welfare calls.

The Primate praised the ladies for their outstanding service rendered to the church community and quoted the late Catholicos Karekin I who said, “Where there is a will, there are a thousand ways.”  His Eminence added that “We need to continue our journey.  We will never ever give up.”  He shared with the ladies the many positive steps and continuous improvement that the Western Diocese is undertaking despite these challenging times.

Archbishop Derderian highlighted such continuing missions as the creation of new mission parishes, the additions of new deacons and priesthood candidates, as well as solid plans ahead to resume the celebration of the Divine Liturgy with the participation of the faithful within the guidelines of city, county and state regulations. Archbishop Derderian noted the new pastoral appointments in the Western Diocese including the appointments of Fr. Gomidas Zohrabian as Parish Priest of St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church of Fowler (effective August 1, 2020), Fr. Zaven Markosyan as Parish Priest of St. Sarkis Armenian Church of Santa Clarita (effective June 1, 2020), Dn. Gevorg Gevorgyan as Deacon-in-Charge of St. Garabed Armenian Church of the Desert (effective June 2020), Fr. Krikor Zakaryan as Parish Priest of St. Vartan Armenian Church of Oakland (effective March 1, 2020), and Dn. Daniel Aydenian as Deacon-in-Charge of Holy Cross Armenian Church of Turlock. Archbishop Derderian also informed the ladies about the continuation of administrative functions by most Diocesan sub-committees through virtual meetings. The pastoral visitations of Archbishop Derderian have also resumed with the groundblessing ceremony of the new church complex of St. John Garabed Armenian Church of San Diego on May 31st. In the month of August, the Primate will visit the communities of Sts. Sahag-Mesrob Armenian Church in Reedley and St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church of Fowler.

Ladies Society Central Council Chairlady Gladys Saroyan thanked the ladies for their participation, their creativity, and their zeal and commitment toward maintaining the vision of the LSCC founders.

“Communication is very important at all times, but especially important at this time,” she said.  “You are all a great examples of visionaries who value communication among each other and with our members.”  She urged the chairladies to continue their outreach efforts to all the female members of their parishes and to encourage them to become viable participants of ladies society chapters within their respective communities.

A future zoom meeting will be scheduled in the coming weeks, which will include all ladies society chapters of the Western Diocese, and will continue the discussion on how best to serve the members during these times for the benefit of their spiritual well-being.
